Understanding concussion regulation
Concussion policies vary across sport type, level, and organization. Some states/provinces have created legislation regarding concussion safety efforts however, there is no official regulatory body to enforce concussion policies.
The Concussion Safety and Compliance Corporation (CSCC) exists to protect athletes by regulating concussion safety standards across sport. We protect athletes by:
- Setting requirements so that only sport organizations meeting the minimum safety requirements can register with CSCC.
- Developing rules and guidelines for concussion safety, including a code of ethics that coaches and athletes must follow.
- Implementing measures to prevent the risk of concussion in sport.
- Requiring documentation and record keeping of all suspected concussions and unintentional contact.
- Investigating complaints about an organization’s policies and/or the actions of their coaches, and disciplining if necessary.
The CSCC will maintain on their website a database of registered sport organizations, which includes updated policies (record keeper) and any disciplinary actions.
You can be assured that sport organizations from the Concussion Safety & Compliance Registry, are held to the highest standard of concussion safety which includes, annual coaching certification, and compliance from all coaches, athletes, and members.
Registered sport organizations are held responsible by the CSCC for upholding their concussion policies. Any concerns regarding a registered sport organization or its members may be reported to the CSCC for investigation.
CSCC cannot address concerns about unregistered sport organizations. These organizations have not agreed to meet the same safety requirements and are not responsible for meeting standards set by CSCC.
